[Bay of Islands] Pools. Beaches. Waterfalls!

At the moment, I'm sitting in a beautiful house surrounded by fields and dense vegetation, somewhere in Kerikeri. Phil and Asia's place is just lovely!

I love the huge windows with the afternoon sun pouring in, all the birds singing somewhere near the house, the cool breeze coming in through open doors, the vibrant colors and cute little items, such as cups and teapots all around the house. This impromptu office I've set up for myself today is just too ideal!

Today is a day off after a few days of adventure since we left Whangarei, and I will be preparing to be on the road again tomorrow, exploring the rest of the Northland!

The last days in Whangarei were of relaxation and experimentation (in the kitchen), jumping in pools, taking long walks, playing with kids, watching movies, and just a lot of conversations!

[Whangarei] An Escape to the Beginning of Summer

It feels like summer here!!! Although it is only the beginning of spring.

But all these beaches! All these coasts and bays and pools and cold beer!! Whangarei has me believing that summer is just around the corner!

Finally, after weeks of working in Auckland and random exploration of places outside of the city, I have finally left the place behind, and have spent the last few days in the beautiful Whangarei district in Northland. Here I will try to catch up filling you in of everything that has been happening ever since I arrived in New Zealand! Starting with what's been happening this week in Whangarei!

[Singapore] Humble Observations in 2015 【新加坡觀察】

Today marks the last day of my stay here in Singapore. Some would think that ten days here is too long for a holiday, others would think that it takes a life time to truly get to know this island-country (as with every city and every country).

It's truly been an amazing time for me here, especially since this is the country of my childhood, where I established my perspective for this world, where my values for the connection between urban life and the natural environment were built.

Throughout these few days, I've gotten to see the "typical" Singapore, the "past" Singapore from my memories, as well the super new cosmopolitan eye-blinding bling bling modern Singapore! I was SO amazed when passing the CBD district and Marina Bay for the first time after already spending an entire week here! How well my friend had me tucked away in the REAL Singapore, away from all the lights and buildings!

However, I may have been hanging around the "typical" Singapore environment, I have not been around "typical" Singaporeans. My friends have made this experience so much more unforgettable than I had ever thought.

I feel so blessed and lucky to have chosen to come to Singapore right now, when they are holding their SEA Games (already winning EIGHTY-TWO gold medals as of today!) as well as celebrating their SG50. It is also considered the rainy season now I think, so it's not as blazing hot and scorching everyday, but cloudy with a comfortable breeze all the time.

Here I'd like to list my own insignificant observations I've made over the past few days, however minute and probably only interesting to my own self. This is my idea of Singapore in 2015: (criticism and responses are welcome!)

[Hike Taiwan] Smangus_Village in the Clouds 司馬庫斯

[village in the clouds]

[on our way to Yaya Q-Parung]

For the past two days, we visited the Atayal village of 司馬庫斯 - or in 泰雅族語 - Smangus. Despite the torturous drive up and down the mountains, it was a trip full of awe and grace. every few seconds, my heart felt recharged full of gratitude and love for the natural beauty of this island.

It's been quite a while since I've given thought to the spiritual, at all, but being in what they call "上帝的部落", (or "Village in the Clouds"), I could feel the presence of a different kind of energy that draws visitors from far away, as well as the energy that their people is bound together by.

For the Sake of a Few Lines

“For the sake of a few lines one must see many cities, men and things. One must know the animals, one must feel how the birds fly and know the gesture with which the small flowers open in the morning. One must be able to think back to roads in unknown regions, to unexpected meetings and to partings which one had long seen coming; to days of childhood that are still unexplained, to parents that one had to hurt when they brought one some joy and one did not grasp it (it was joy for someone else); to childhood illness that so strangely began with a number of profound and grave transformations, to days in rooms withdrawn and quiet and to mornings by the sea, to the sea itself, to seas, to nights of travel that rushed along on high and flew with all the stars-and it is not enough if one may think all of this. One must have memories of many nights of love, none of which was like the others, of the screams of women in labor, and of light, white, sleeping women in childbed, closing again. But one must also have been beside the dying, one must have sat beside the dead in the room with the open window and the fitful noises. And still it is not enough to have memories. One must be able to forget them when they are many, and one must have the great patience to wait until they come again. For it is not yet the memories themselves. Not until they have turned to blood within us, to glance, to gesture, nameless and no longer to be distinguished from ourselves-not until then can it happen that in a most rare hour the first word of a verse arises in their midst and goes forth from them.”

[Travel Taiwan] Hehuanshan Road Trip!!! 合歡山_環(半)島

‎Once upon a time ... it was really just about going AROUND the island. Honestly, the idea of going THROUGH the island never really struck me. But that's what happened over CNY break. It took me less than 24 hours to head out west from home and come back again from the east. Taking the early train from Miaoli, get on our one and most important mode of transportation and head down to Taichung into Puli and up into the mountains, and coming back from Yilan! Googlemap shows a total distance of 494km!!

[Cambodia] Children of Angkor's Tree School

I had an early start on "planning" this trip to Cambodia. Booking a flight, and finding places to stay ... and that's all I ever did. The plan was no plan, and it was a marvelous plan!

[Cambodia] Must Go!

Wow ... Cambodia, what a journey. There is so much to be written about this short but abundant one week trip, to a country where many has journeyed to before ... pilgrimages to a thousand years of magnificent history, and heartful tributes to the victims of the country's tragic past of the modern age. I can't believe I never put this on the bucket list, but I'm hoping that everyone should, visit and be awed by the remains of the Angkor Era at least once in a lifetime.

[As mentioned as one of my 24th birthday wishes!]

The Alchemist. 牧羊少年的奇幻之旅

After our first attempt in understanding spirituality, self-consciousness, our ultimate purpose in being ... and all that last week, through reading Osho, Today we turned to one of the all time best-reads - The Alchemist, 牧羊少年的奇幻之旅. by Paulo Coelho.

[Bike Around Taiwan] Rent Your Bike Here!

For anyone who's rented a bike from the best bike rental place in Taipei, you're most likely to have taken the exact same picture as this, or similar. It reflects the genuinely whole-hearted encouragement they give you before you head off on your trip, AND when you get back!

佳遊單車,though I'm not sure if they have an English name. I highly recommend them for your choice of bike rental! They're equipped with MERIDA bikes, and have you prepared with the whole package! Anything you can think of, helmets, tools, extra inner tubes ... and a whole lot of stuff I did fine with without understanding anyways. They would also give you free personal lessons of how to work the gadgets, how to fix your bike, how to get around without any trouble.

[Bike Around Taiwan] One Year Later ...

It's been an ENTIRE WHOLE YEAR??! 365 DAYS gone past! Actually MORE than that! 365 plus 2 I think. A YEAR!!! Since we completed this trip of biking around Taiwan. Everything seems so distant yet so clear in my mind. I can still clearly re-experience every step of the pedal. Every "omg, another uphill?" Every field and coast we were so drawn to by their beauty. Every cheer and encouragement we earned from passer-bys.

[Happiness Project] Clutter Clearing

Inspired (a little) by the Happiness Project, which I'm currently reading, and MOSTLY because of my unnerving urge to clear away all the MESS that's been just mindlessly piling and piling and piling up, ever since I LAST cleared it all away, which was when ... we got this new shelf just to "organize" all this stuff into.

Michelangelo in Taipei

After Salvador Dali in Taipei, for this month, it's Michelangelo in Taipei!!! At the 歷史博物館, where the last exhibition we went to was that of Pablo Picasso! This current exhibition was just as exciting Dali's! I've never really been that INTO art, especially those from the Renaissance ... classical art and the sort ... but now that I'm starting to see and getting to know the stories behind such renowned works of art, suddenly I can comprehend them more intimately and personally!

Salvador Dali in Taipei

This month, we went to the Dali Exhibition in Taipei, 中山紀念堂! Rarely do I actually dedicate this much of my time to getting to know an artist! I've always found it incomprehensible the CROWDING amount of visitors a visiting exhibition can get whenever they come to Taipei. There really are that many people into this stuff? Or is it ... as some people term it ... 假文青. lol.

[via my friend's iPhone!]

But I genuinely enjoyed this one! I vaguely remembered having been to one of his exhibitions loooong long ago. There was a Dali museum in Florida too, but I never got to visit that one. This time's though, I just fell head over heels in love with this guy.

I may not be able to fully appreciate his craziness or genius, but these are works of art that I'd actually WANT to understand. All the symbolic items that appear in his works ... drawers for sexual desires, canes representing helplessness, and soft watches are the relative time that's undetermined ... or something like that.

I may not understand every concept the artist is trying to express, but I can sense maybe how the Spanish landscapes have influenced his use of colors filling his paintings. Or at least, that will be forever how I'd picture the country he's from, until I get to visit for myself. Another thing worth noting is, no matter how dreamlike his works depict his surreal mind, they're always WITH a horizon, IN a landscape, with a sky and ground, apparent with a visual perspective, unlike how I'd typically imagine dream scenarios, which would be ungraspable events, people or dreams that float around without meaning, without destination, without form.
